It incubates businesses, not entrepreneurs

Traditional incubation hubs normally take the form of giving entrepreneurs some business skills for a fixed period of time while they are (somehow) engaged in some business. Their focus is not on creating and supporting businesses as it is on creating smart entrepreneurs. Often, the “incubated” entrepreneurs are thrown back to the “jungle” where they came from, only to start back from square one. In contrast, The NUL Innovation Hub’s focus is on the business itself (which of course includes the manpower [entrepreneurs] within it). The focus is holistic and it is aimed at assisting businesses in testing and strengthening:

  • Acceptability of the quality of products by the market.
  • Production processes to improve speed and reliability for mass production.
  • Raw material supply to ensure sustainability.

It intertwines laboratory level work or research work with incubation and market feed-back

The incubation phase at the NUL Innovation Hub is not a stand-alone process. Products that were cleared for incubation from laboratories are produced at small scale and taken to the markets. The idea is to the test their market acceptability and the organizational and process readiness to sustain production. The lessons learned may require that the product is taken back to the laboratories or research stages, be fine-tuned and reproduced again at incubation and be taken back to the markets until the markets largely appreciate the products.

It shields infant businesses from harsh business realities

It provides enough time for incubated businesses to mature (which is a maximum of three years in this case except in special cases) Businesses are provided with free space, electricity, water, internet and other amenities to make it easy for them to focus on mastering production at their early stage of development.
